Hayward, California (December 14, 2013) - The parent organization of Hayward Chinese School worked collaboratively with Chinese American Abacus Association (CAAA) and conducted a "Chinese Abacus Math Workshop." The workshop successfully introduced Chinese abacus skills to students and showed the way to enhance students' math computational competency using Chinese abacus. The demo was successfully held at the Multipurpose Room of Stonebrae Elementary School on Dec 13, 2012.

為推廣中國特有珠算運算技巧，海沃石東博小學（Stonebrae Elementary School）13 日
下午舉辦了中國珠算數學工作坊，吸引近 100 名學童及家長參加。許多人都是生平
第一次見到算盤。

活動由灣區華僑文教中心贊助，多元文化教育研究中心、中美珠心算學會、石東博
小學主辦。除了介紹現代算盤的用法及基本撥珠方法，也解說中國古算具，如太乙
算、兩儀算、三才算等。三位學生上台示範時，也有小朋友從書包拿出計算機競
速，對不用計算機也能正確快速算出答案，感到不可思議。

中美珠心算學會會長黃惠姜表示，珠算在灣區發展已有 20 多年，原本只是想介紹
珠算文化和運算技巧，沒想到對一般學生的數字啟蒙觀發揮了很大的功效。她說，
近 10 年來，在灣區學習珠算的非華人學生人數，已有超越華人學生的趨勢。
多元文化教育研究中心執行長孫鳳傑認為，珠算與算盤是實際、有用的文化管道。
石東博小學中文沉浸課程負責人村山（Deborah Murayama ）說，學校推動中文沉浸
課程多年，藉由這項活動，更可能讓孩子對算數更有興趣。

I'm excited to learn that our parent organization MERC was recently awarded with a grant by Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission (OCAC, 僑委會）. This is an indication of the quality of our organization as a result of joint efforts among our management team, parents, and teachers.

The purpose of this grant is to promote the Chinese language and culture education in the local community. Our management team has discussed the possibility of a further partnership with Stonebrae. It is thought to use this grant to conduct a math workshop introducing the Chinese abacus math skills to the Stonebrae community. This is truly an example of MERC sponsors community outreach events to strengthen the community relationships among diverse cultural groups.
